Taxonomic remark Index Nominum Genericorum lists this name as not validly published (a provisional name), however it is treated as validly published in Doweld, 2017 and Herendeen, 2020. Illegitimate and nomenclaturally superfluous when published (since it was intended to replace four previously and validly published distinct fossil generic names), the name was revived by Seward (1934) for extinct conifers from Gondwana and has since been used as such in the paleobotanical literature, but excluding all of Potonié's original species. The name was proposed for conservation, with V. africana Seward, 1934 as a new type, by Doweld, 2017, a proposal which was recommended for acceptance by the Nomenclature Committee for Fossils (Herendeen, 2020). [details]
