Taxonomic remark McKenna & Bell, 1997 quote a statement by Simpson, 1945 to the effect that the name "Megalonyx Jefferson, 1799" is a "non-existent name" but that the name is available from Harlan, 1825. However there is no supporting evidence for this statement and there is no internal or external evidence for the unavailability of Jefferson's name, which is accordingly treated as accepted in IRMNG (confirmation in Babcock, 2024), with Harlan's name treated as a later usage (noting as well that Harlan ascribes the name to Jefferson, despite misspelling it ("Megalonix") in several key places) [details]
