Taxonomic remark AlgaeBase, 2021 states: "Also classified (erroneously) as a foraminifera. While the type species [C. robusta] is definitely a charophyte gyrogonite, the other species described by Williamson (which are calcified vesicles of various origins) and subsequent authors can be related to "radiolarians, sponges, acritarchs, possible foraminifers, charophytes and green algae" (Kaneva & al. 2013)." Type species previously given as C. laevis e.g. in Andrews, 1955; Peck & Morales, 1966; Grambast-Fessard, Feist & Wang, 1989 (Taxon, 38(4): 641-643) and genus therefore classified as Calcitarcha in Versteegh et al., 2009, however this is based on an obsolete version of the botanical Code; current versions recognise the type species fixation (of C. robusta) by Miller, 1889 as valid, thus placing this genus as a charophyte. However Vachard et al., 2012 continue to use Calcisphaera as a valid genus in Calcitarcha. [details]
