Taxonomic remark Erected as subclass Eophytidae Edwards, Morris, Axe, Duckett, Pressel & Kenrick, 2021, within class Embryopsida Engler ex Pirani & Prado (2012), "to be consistent with ranking in the classification of Chase & Reveal (2009)", in which other equivalent groups (bryophytes, liverworts, hornworts) are all treated as subclasses within a single class, Equisetopsida [=Embrypsoda], for all land plants. In IRMNG at the present time, following Ruggiero et al., 2015, land plants are treated as a set of separate phyla (Anthocerotophyta, Bryophyta, etc.) within a single superphylum (Embryophyta), thus eophytes are also treated at that rank in IRMNG. Since Eophytidae is a descriptive name, not an automatically typified name, it may be "used unchanged at different ranks" (ICNafp Art. 16.1). [details]
