Taxonomic remark From Sohn et al., 2012: It is not clear whether the author intended to propose Lepidopterites as a generic name. Although he mentioned that the fossil is close to Pterophoridae, Lepidopterites was used to represent its lepidopteran association, not a specific association with any family or genus. In this case, the taxon name Lepidopterites is actually a collective name for an order and thus cannot be used as a generic name. Moreover, Piton’s description, since it was published after 1930, should meet the requirements of ICZN article 13.1. Since Lepidopterites was not accompanied by any description and its definition was not given unambiguously, the name is invalid and rejected. [details]
