Previously classified in green algae, xanthophytes, and chrysophytes, centrohelid heliozoans or incertae sedis; according to 18S rDNA sequencing, M. mediterranea groups with NC5 clade (mostly environmental sequences), 2 of which are marine Choanocystidae (Centroplasthelida, heliozoans), refer Zlatogursky et al., 2021.
