Taxonomic remark From Evenhuis & Pape, 2019: The listing of this name in Meigen (1803: 266; 1804: 100) is not an independent proposal of the name but a subsequent usage of Henops Illiger, 1798. The mistake seems to have originated in Froriep’s Wörterbuch (Froriep 1825b: 398). In his discussion of the genus Astomella Latreille, 1809, Froriep stated: “Audouin scheint diese Gattung für identisch mit Henops Meigen zu halten.” [Audouin seems to maintain that this genus is identical with Henops Meigen.] A check of Audouin (1822: 42) shows that Audouin did not mention an author for Henops, but in a subsequent publication by Dufour (1833: 210) it is stated that Audouin thought Astomella to be similar to Henops Illiger. The mistaken attribution of authorship of this nominal genus to Meigen by Froriep (1825b) has been thereafter perpetuated in many subsequent works. [details]
