Taxonomic remark The genus Hysterites exists as 2 name instances, Hysterites Göppert, 1836 and Hysterites Unger, 1841, both for fossil fungi. Andrews, 1970 lists Göppert's instance only, with the assigned/type species H. opegraphoides Goeppert, also noting an earlier (1836) by the same author, designated nom. nud. Index Nominum Genericorum lists only Unger's instance (as Perithecia; Tertiary; Radoboj, Croatia), with type H. labyrinthiformis Unger. Index Fungorum (2026) lists both instances, with Unger's as a nom. illeg. Hyde et al. list only "Hysterites Unger" in Hysteriales, with a count of 16 species. IFPNI lists only Unger's name. Saccardo, Syll. Fung., 10, 1892, p. 772-775 lists 16 species in Hysterites, including many described by Göppert, but ascribes the genus to Tode, [?in] Sacc. Syll. II [=vol.2, 1843], p. 743, although that entry is in fact for Hysterium Tode, not Hysterites. It is unclear whether or not Andrews, 1970's "nom. nud." designation refers to the genus as published by Göppert in 1846, or to its earlier publication in 1836; presuming that the latter is the case, at this time we accept Göppert's name as the current name (also per Index Fungorum) and that by Unger as a later homonym (nom. illeg.), also as per Index Fungorum. [details]
