Taxonomic remark From Cantrill, 1998: Gleichenites was originally based on five Palaeozoic species that had dichotomously branched foliage (Goeppert 1836), the branching pattern being a probable indicator of affinities to the fern family Gleicheniaceae (Goeppert 1836). However, this morphology is now known to occur in a number of unrelated taxonomic groups, and all Goeppert's original taxa have been transferred to the pteridosperms. As a result, Gleichenites Goeppert is a junior synonym of one of the Palaeozoic seedfern taxa (Goeppert did not designate a type of the genus) and is nomenclaturally invalid. [details]
