Descriptive info Fossil "Calcisphaerulidae", allocated to dinoflagellates by Fensome et al. (not followed here) [details]
Taxonomic remark Allocated to calcareous nannoplankton by Tappan (1980), but assigned to Calcitarcha (? algae incertae sedis) following Versteegh et al., 2009. Authority cited elsewhere as Lorenz, 1901. Wendler et al., 2013 treat Pithonella as "possibly" or "probably" a calcareous dinoflagellate, allocating it to both Calcitarcha and Thoracosphaeraceae simultaneously, which is illogical. Galloway, 1933 treated Pithonella as a junior synonym of Oligostegina Kaufmann in Heer, 1865, consistering that the two names were congeneric, however this appears to be a misinterpretation (refer Colom, 1955, details given under IRMNG record for Oligostegina) although has entered the literature to a degree, e.g. as "Oligostegina limestones" (actually Pithonella) [details]
