Taxonomic remark Described as fossil fungus, although name preoccupied by other supposed fossil fungal remains viz. Sclerotites Geinitz, 1842 and Sclerotites A. Massalongo, 1858. Krassilov & Rasnitsyn, 2008 state: (p. 39) "Taxonomic status of the derived fossil genera Sphaerites Unger, 1950 and Sclerotites Meschinelli, 1892, remains uncertain. Though intended for fossil fungi, they might have been the first generic names of fossil leaf galls." Knowlton, 1919 lists 2 named and 1 unnamed North American species assigned to this genus instance, including Jeffrey & Chrysler's S. brandonianus (1906). [details]
