Taxonomic remark Name created for organisms interpreted as fossil red algae, however the type genus Solenopora and type species Solenopora spongioides have been re-interpreted as a fossil sponge (order Chaetetida), leaving the family name invalid in algae unless conserved. Woerkerling (1988) and Aguirre & Barattolo (2001) considered the "Solenoporaceae" to be an incertae sedis group of red algae, refer Cózar & Vachard, 2006. The red algal component of former Solenoporaceae is now recognised as Elianellaceae, refer Vachard et al., 2016. [details]
