Taxonomic remark Pithonelloid calcareous cyst fossils, originally assigned to Foraminifera. Included in Thoracosphaeraceae (Dinophyta) by Elbrächter et al., 2008, but excluded following Versteegh et al., 2009; not syn. of Cadosinidae (cf. Masters & Scott, 1978) as type genera now in different fams. More recently, Wendler et al., 2013, again suggests that Pithonella has affinities with dinoflagellates, however since this is not 100% certain the relevant taxa are still included in Calcitarcha at this time per original description of the latter group. Note also, if Pithonellids were to be definitively included in Dinophyta, this family name would become a synonym of whichever dinophyte family name is applicable, namely Thoracosphaeraceae (per Elbrächter et al., 2008 and AlgaeBase) or Peridiniaceae (subfamily Calciodinelloideae) per DINOFLAJ3.
