Taxonomic remark The type genus Umbella V.P. Maslov non C. d’Orb. was originally described as a foraminifer and is a junior homonym under the ICZN, but later considered a charophyte for which Umbella would be the correct name (not preoccupied in botany). Loeblich & Tappan (1961) proposed the replacement name Umbellina in zoology only; in botany this would be a superfluous replacement name. Doweld (2014) proposed changing the botanical name to Umbellinaceae to make the treatment equivalent under both Codes, which was recommended for acceptance by the Nomenclature Committee on Fossils in 2016, refer Herendeen, 2016.
