Taxonomic remark Eichwald, 1840 (this paper) established this genus name under the spelling Astrolepis, however this spelling is interpreted as an incorrect original spelling by later workers (refer Van der Laan, 2018; Downs et al., 2019) based on his earlier use of the spelling Asterolepis in a letter to H.G. Bronn in 1839, subsequently published in Neues Jahrbuch für Mineralogie, Geognosie, Geologie und Petrekaften-Kunde although that publication post-dated the appearance in the Bulletin scientifique de l’Académie Saint Petersbourg. That "Asterolepis" instance, labelled as an error in Neave, is in IRMNG treated as a later usage of "Asterolepis" as a corrected original spelling based on the name's formal first appearance (under the spelling Astrolepis) in Bulletin scientifique de l’Académie Saint Petersbourg.
