Taxonomic remark Publication year given as 1934 in some sources (discrepancy not further researched). Appears to be a synonym either of Serpulites Sowerby in Murchison, 1839 (which name is, however, a junior homonym) or Sphenothallus Hall, 1847. Zhu et al., 2000 state: SCHMIDT & TEICHMÜLLER
(1955) concluded that Sphenothallus HALL 1847, Torellella HOLM 1893, Enchostorna MILLER & GURLEY 1896, and Hallotheca BOUCEK 1936 are synonyms of Serpulites SOWERBY in MURCHISON 1839. However, SCHMIDT & TEICHMÜLLER (1956) also proposed that Sphenothallus HALL 1947 should be retained for Silurian to Carboniferous, phosphatic tubes having a basal attachment disk and two longitudinal thickenings. This conclusion was supported by MASON & YOCHELSON (1985), who pointed out that the name Sphenothallus is better known than Serpulites. [details]
