Taxonomic remark Candidatus Melainabacteria was erected as a class by Soo et al., 2014 along with a number of Candidatus orders. Order Vampirovibrionales Chuvochina et al. 2024 (containing family Vampirovibrionaceae Chuvochina et al. 2024 and genus Vampirovibrio Gromov & Mamkayeva 1972 ex Gromov & Mamkaeva 1980) is sometimes assigned to this class but also (as a validly published name) to the new class Vampirovibrionophyceae corrig.
