Taxonomic remark The original wild horse, surviving as the tarpan, E. ferus ferus (extinct in the wild 1879, in captivity 1909) and Przewalski's horse, E. ferus przewalskii (the latter sometimes as E. przewalskii), formerly extinct in the wild but since re-introduced from captive bred populations. A nom. cons. vs. caballus (specific name for the domestic horse) when the wild and domestic forms are considered conspecific, refer ICZN Opinion 2027, 2003. [details]
