Guillard et al. in 1975 (with type H. saccatum) was also invalid since the proposed type species was not validly described in that work (no holotype designated), refer Guiry, 2017. The valid publication of this genus and its included species is by Guiry, 2017, thus it should be cited as Halochlorococcum P.J.L. Dangeard, 1965 ex M.D. Guiry, 2017. [details]
