Taxonomic remark Haeckel, 1887 writes: "The genus Thalassoplancta was founded by me in 1862 for a Radiolarian with simple hollow needles in the calymma, which was afterwards recognised as a Phæodarium, belonging to Cannorrhaphis". He then retained Thalassoplancta for 2 different species, thereby creating a new genus name in a different group i.e Thalassosphaerida; the new instance was effectively a junior homonym of the original name and was re-named Thalassorhaphis by Campbell, 1951.
