Taxonomic remark Treated as protozoan (zoological nomenclature) by Ruggiero et al., 2015 and Index Fungorum (2019 version), however as a fungal group (botanical nomenclature) by Tedersoo et al., 2018, Wijayawardene et al., 2020, and Voigt et al., 2021. IRMNG presently follows the treatment as given in Voigt et al., 2012. Also note (1), Rozellids are not separated out at phylum level in the treatment of Ruggiero et al., but as Class Rozellidea within phylum Choanozoa, and (2) under botanical nomenclature, this phylum has already been named Cryptomycota by Jones & Richards, 2011. The phylum was also named as new by Corsaro et al., 2014 however this becomes an isonym, refer Index Fungorum (2019 version). In the treatments of Tedersoo et al., 2018 and Wijayawardene et al., 2020, the phylum concept is expanded to also include the Microsporidia (treated as a subphylum by Wijayawardene et al.), which is followed here. From that work: Upon following the ranking of Tedersoo et al. (2016) who proposed Rozellomycota (including Microsporidia) and Aphelidiomycota as phyla in Kingdom Fungi, the phylum Microsporidia becomes obsolete. To recognize this group as a monophyletic lineage of highly specialized intracellular parasites with specific developmental, structural and genetic features (see above, Structural and functional organization of Microsporidia), we propose an intermediate rank of subphylum for this taxon. [details]
