Taxonomic remark Assigned to Ginkgoales in Taylor et al., 2009, however these authors note that "the plant [i.e., Schmeissneria] also has features that might suggest affinities with the gnetophytes". The genus has also been suggested to be a Jurassic angiosperm by some authors e.g. Wang, 2010. In the treatment of Novikoff & Barabasz-Krasny, 2015 the family is allocated to the pteridosperm order Arberiales. Herendeen et al., 2017 also treat Schmeissneria as related to the Ginkgoales. Coiro et al., 2019 suggest an affinity with the order Czekanowskiales (listed therein as "ginkgophyte"). [details]
