Described as new by Hutton, although he stated, "This genus comes next to Bregmaceros, Thompson, afterwards called Calloptilum by Sir J. Richardson, which name I have now adopted for the present genus." Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Calloptilum Richardson 1845 in recent fishes; replaced by Auchenoceros Günther 1889. (Eschmeyer).
