Taxonomic remark Authorship given in many sources as Cooke & Kear, 1999, possibly incorrect (see below). Initially proposed as subfamily, raised to family by Kear & Cooke, 2001. The latter authors give 2 different authorities for the original subfamily, namely Cooke & Kear, 1999, and Flannery, Archer & Plane, 1983. Black et al., 2014 give "Balbaridae (Flannery, Archer and Plane, 1983) sensu Cooke and Kear (1999)" which implies that the authorship should correctly be given as Flannery, Archer & Plane, 1983 (authorship does not change when a subgenus rank is changed, or when a taxon concept is emended). [details]
